the art of traveling west

The out west effect

I haven’t spent much time out west. Really none at all growing up. Last year was the first year I ventured out west. A road trip to Wyoming with my husband for our 2 year anniversary. Since then, I think about nothing else other than the beauty of western America. This year I had the privilege of being in one of my best friend’s weddings. Her bachelorette trip took us to good ol’ Scottsdale Arizona. A new city & state I have yet conquered. The views were unreal. Even from the house we were staying at, I could see the mountains, the cacti, the desert. It was stunning. Like nothing I’ve seen before. We even took a hike to Sedona and ventured Cathedral Rock. The views were nothing short of incredible.

But the fashion…

The fashion out west…

That might be my favorite part.

Cowboy boots, cowboy hats, lots of gaudy jewelry. Everything I might be too shy to wear in Michigan. I feel free wear in out west.

I have a simple style. Whether that means I’m not good at picking my outfits out or that I’m too scared to wear anything unique. Or it could also mean I’m lazy and I am content with just a sweater and jeans. My everyday outfit. I look at these girls and see taste. I look at me and see simple, minimalist, boring. But maybe that just means I’m a little too stuck in my ways. Traveling, even if it’s just to a different state, can be so freeing. Seeing a new sense of yourself. Being someone you wish you could be back home. But why can’t I just express myself like that back home? Is it the judgement? The unpredictability of what people might say to me or think about me?

When you’re somewhere else, you can be someone else. Every time I come back from a trip I say I’m going to keep being the person I turned into on this trip. But does it really change? Sometimes, but most of the time not. Here I am saying let’s change. Let’s take all the things we love about the places we’ve been and the people we’ve met and turn it into who we are at home. If home is the place I’m going to be for a while, I might as well be the person I wish I was and turn it into a place I want to be.
